This album gives me great joy. Others may simply share their musical tastes; trying to find people that will be made happy by their choices. That is not enough for me, however. I prefer to inflict my musical preferences and perversions on others. Just ask my co-workers. Or my wife and kids.

So, what kind of sonic abuse have I chosen for us in this post?

Let’s go with Soulwax – Night Versions, as it encapsulates a bit of what I am talking about, plus it has the added benefit of driving Andrew nuts.

Soulwax is a band from Belgium that is built around brothers David and Stephen Dewaele. While the group started in 1995 making typical Radiohead-esque alternative music, they have evolved into something much different than that over time. Over the years between Souldwax and their other moniker 2manydjs, they have created music and mixes that take inspiration from a wide variety of genres including hard rock, punk, disco, electronica, synth-wave, and more.

Back to Night Versions. This album was released in 2005, and it is actually the band remixing and remaking the tracks from their 2004 Album titled Any Minute Now.The 2004 Album is superb and mostly hard rock/alternative in style. Night Versions, though? It is a full-on disco-punk-drance-and-grind-driven masterpiece that makes you want to bob your head, tap your feet, or just dance like you are having a seizure.

The album is a blast to the senses. If you like it, I highly suggest checking out some of the live versions of their music on YouTube, where Soulwax’s wild combination of computers, synths, and live instruments gives their music even more dimension and force.

Cheers,
Evan
